The Voice referendum - October 14. Australia, Politics.

"The Voice" is a referendum in Australia designed to give Aboriginals a recognition within the Constitution, and a prescence in Australian society and politics.

Voters will be asked to approve an alteration  to the Australian Constitution, creating a body called the Aboriginal & Torres Straight Islander Voice that "may make representations to the Parliament and the Executive Government ... on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples".

Proposed question:

The current proposal for the question to be put to the Australian people at the 2023 referendum is:

A Proposed Law:

"To alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"

Generally, it can be said that socialists are mainly supportive of the proposal, whereas right and far right wing parties are opposed.

The main opposition to the proposal, is the fear that Aboriginals want to become an autonomous nation within Australia. There doesn't appear to be to much opposition to acknowledging Aboriginals as the "first peoples of Australia".

Since *England invaded Terra Australis in 1788, the First People's have NEVER ceded their sovereignty of their country, but neither have subsequent English and Australian governments acknowledged them. They are the only "natives" not to have been recognised by the English government, who have done so to all other indigenous people that they vanquished.

It should not be forgotten that the First People's of Australia were subjected to murder, rape, kidnapping, theft of lands and chattels, and at least 170 instances of genocide, at the hands of the English invaders.

It should therefore be apparent that such recognition and inclusion should be acknowledged, as part of the culture of a 21st century Australia.
